Carlos Serrano

Carlos Serrano is the chief economist at BBVA Mexico in Mexico City, where he leads a team of economists conducting research on economic trends, financial markets and regulation. Previously, he served as vice president of Regulatory Policy at the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV). In 2000, he was awarded the National Prize for Economic Research, presented annually by Banco Nacional de México. Before joining BBVA, Mr. Serrano served as executive vice president for Regulatory Policy at Mexico’s National Banking and Securities Commission, where he was responsible for designing regulation for banks, securities and derivatives markets, broker-dealers and mutual funds. He also represented Mexico before the Basel Committee and IOSCO. Mr. Serrano previously worked at the World Bank, where he held several positions, including Country Economist for Peru, Paraguay and Bolivia. He also taught advanced macroeconomics and finance at ITAM. Mr. Serrano received his Bachelor’s degree in economics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, where he specialized in macroeconomics, international finance and industrial organization.
