James D. Sweet
Bio
James D. Sweet is a partner with Swanson Sweet LLP in Madison, Wis., where he represents businesses, individuals who are owners of businesses, and other interested parties and groups in bankruptcy cases in both Districts of Wisconsin, the Northern District of Iowa, the Northern of Illinois and the District of Delaware, and throughout Wisconsin in state court receiverships, purchase or sale of business assets, and out-of-court restructurings, workouts and reorganizations. Mr. Sweet has 48 years of experience representing debtors, creditors, bondholders and equity committees, bankruptcy trustees, receivers, banks and other secured creditors, other types of creditors, and purchasers of assets and businesses in bankruptcy cases. He has also acted as a chapter 128 receiver in several cases. Mr. Sweet was named a Fellow by the American College of Bankruptcy in 2014. He is an active member of the American Bar Association, the Turnaround Management Association and ABI, and he is the co-founder of the Western District of Wisconsin Bankruptcy Bar Association and a founding director, past president and chair of the American Board of Certification. Mr. Sweet is a frequent lecturer on bankruptcy, insolvency and workout matters throughout the Midwest, the UW Law School and at national professional conferences. He received his B.A. magna cum laude in political science and philosophy in 1975 from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and his J.D. cum laude in 1978 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
