Bio
John S. Mairo chairs the Financial Restructuring and Creditors’ Rights group at Gibbons P.C. in Newark, N.J., where he focuses his practice on commercial litigation, workouts, financial reorganizations and creditors’ rights. He has represented debtors, secured lenders, creditors’ committees, landlords, administrative agents for syndicates of lenders, foreign representatives and others. Throughout his decades-long career, Mr. Mairo has handled mid-size to multibillion-dollar bankruptcy matters on both national and international scales, securing favorable settlements, proposing beneficial recovery plans, and successfully litigating cases that have enabled his clients’ businesses to thrive and prosper. His experience has included complex restructuring and antitrust multi-district litigation. Mr. Mairo was awarded a certificate by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey in recognition of and appreciation for his pro bono service. He also was appointed to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey’s roster of mediators. Mr. Mairo has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 2014 for Bankruptcy and Creditor/Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law, and in Chambers USA since 2016. He is a member of ABI and the New Jersey Turnaround Management Association, New Jersey State Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Mr. Mairo received his B.A. cum laude in 1991 from Boston College and his J.D. in 1994 from Seton Hall Law School, where he served as managing editor of the Seton Hall Journal of Sport Law and was a member of the Seton Hall Juvenile Justice Clinic.
