Mr. Mark McDonald

Mark McDonald is director of Grant Thornton (BVI) Ltd. in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, and has more than 10 years of experience in recovery and reorganization. He takes insolvency appointments in the BVI and other Eastern Caribbean islands, and his practice focuses on complex cross-border insol- vencies. Prior to locating to the BVI in 2006, Mr. McDonald worked in New Zealand, Cayman Islands and London. He has experience in Stanford International Bank Limited and works with the Antiguan joint liquidators of the bank to assist with their asset-recovery efforts in the aftermath of a US$7 bil- lion Ponzi scheme. Mr. McDonald acts as a joint liquidator of a BVI company that entered into forward freight agreements, which, following the collapse of this market, resulted in counter-party losses in excess of US$500 million. He also acts as a liquidator and receiver of a substantial number of BVI companies in connection with billions of dollars lost by an Icelandic bank. Mr. McDonald is a licensed BVI insolvency practitioner and a Chartered Accountant of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand. He has also been a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. A member of INSOL International, Mr. McDonald received his Bachelor of Management Studies (accounting major) and his Bachelor of Laws with honors in 1998 from Waikato University in New Zealand.
