Prof. Nathalie D. Martin is the Frederick M. Hart Chair in Consumer and Clinical Law at the University of New Mexico School of Law in Albuquerque, N.M., which she joined in 1998. Her research focuses on elder law, consumer law and bankruptcy. Prof. Martin’s current research focuses on viable legal and financial models for continuing-care or life-care contracts, and other methods for regulating services that claim to contain the cost of future long-term care. Her past work has included research on high-cost loans, such as payday, title and installment loans. Her high-cost loan projects include several empirical studies funded by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, including one that funded curbside interviews of payday loan customers and another that studied the credit habits of undocumented persons. Prof. Martin’s works have been cited by the New Mexico Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. She was ABI’s Scholar in Residence in 2005, and she is a member of the American Law Institute, among other professional organizations. Prof. Martin’s most recent book, The Inspired Retirement, brings her professional experience in elder law, paired with her expertise in contemplative practices, directly to retirees from all professional backgrounds. She is a member of the Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania Bars. Prof. Martin received her B.A. in 1983 from St. Olaf College, her J.D. in 1986 from Syracuse University and her L.L.M. in 1998 from Temple University.
