Hon. John E. Steele

John E. Steele is a U.S. District Court Judge for the Middle District of Florida in Fort Myers, sworn in on July 28, 2000. Prior to this appointment, he served as a magistrate judge in the Jacksonville Division of the Middle District of Florida from 1991-2000. Judge Steele started his career in the Wayne County (Mich.) Prosecuting Attorney's Office as an assistant prosecuting attorney. In 1980, he worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Grand Rapids, Mich., U.S. Attorney's Office, until his transfer to Florida. From 1981-88, Judge Steele continued to work as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Jackson- ville U.S. Attorney's Office, then worked in the litigation department of Mahoney Adams & Criser, chairing the department from 1989-91. Judge Steele is a member of the Michigan and Florida State Bars. He received his J.D. from the University of Detroit Law School in 1973.
