
Ms. S. Elizabeth Gibson
S. Elizabeth Gibson is a Burton Craige Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she teaches courses in bankruptcy, federal jurisdiction and civil procedure. She practiced law with the Washington, D.C., firm of Shea & Gardner before beginning her academic career in 1983. Prof. Gibson's research has centered on the structure and operation of the federal bankruptcy system, including the use of bankruptcy to resolve mass torts. She authored Case Studies of Mass Tort Limited Fund Class Action Settlements & Bankruptcy Reorganizations (Federal Judicial Center 2000) and Judicial Management of Mass Tort Bankruptcy Cases (Federal Judicial Center 2005). She has also published articles in various law journals and is a member of the editorial board of and contributing author to Collier on Bankruptcy. Since 2008, Prof. Gibson has served as the reporter for the Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules. She is a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference and a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, and in 2005 she received the Excellence in Education Award, presented by the Endowment for Education of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. Prof. Gibson has been a frequent speaker at educational programs sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center and the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, among others. She is a member of American and North Carolina Bar Associations and ABI. Prof. Gibson received her undergraduate degree from Duke University and her J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Following her graduation from law school, she clerked for Judge J. Braxton Craven, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and for Justice Byron R. White on the U.S. Supreme Court.
